Jim’s Gems – Face Time – Work Smarter, not Longer

Another keeper from Jim.

When I worked at a big bank in NY, we had a full-floor “bull pen” seating arrangement. Think a cubicle setup
without the separation walls. Everyone could see everyone else.
At the end of the day, there was a departure hierarchy that said you didn’t leave until after your boss had left. That
hierarchy resulted in mass inefficiencies. People would sit at their desks appearing busy, but really not
accomplishing much until their boss left and it was comfortable for them to leave too. This practice was called
putting in “face time”.
Green Street does not believe in “face time”. Instead, we respect productivity. Just putting in hours and appearing to
be busy doesn’t cut it. Get your stuff done, do it in an efficient manner, and never feel an obligation to stick around
the office just to give the appearance that you are working harder than the next guy.
As we head into earnings season, it’s a reality that everyone’s hours will get a bit longer. Nevertheless, productivity
and product quality will always trump hours worked in our shop.
